WELCOME TO STUDENTS FROM CANADA

Four students from Alberta and Ontario, Canada, arrived at our school on February 13th.  They'll be here with us for three months. 

The videos shown in this post are an approach to the beauty of the country and two of its ten provinces, Ontario and Alberta.


Canada is a federal state that is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state (since February 6, 1952), and Stephen Harper as Prime Minister and head of the government (since February 6, 2006). 

It is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages. 

It's one of the world's most highly-developed countries and has one of the highest standards of living in the world.

Canada is one of the few developed nations that are net exporters of energy. Atlantic Canada possesses vast offshore deposits of natural gas. 

Ontario /ɒnˈtɛərioʊ/ is a province of Canada, located in east-central Canada. It is Canada's most populous province/territory  and fourth largest in total area. It is home to the nation's most populous city, Toronto, and the nation's capital, Ottawa.

Ontario is sometimes conceptually divided into two regions, Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The great majority of Ontario's population and its arable land is located in the south. In contrast, the northern three-quarters of Ontario is sparsely populated.

The majority of Ontarians are of English or other European descent. Slightly less than 5% of the population of Ontario is Franco-Ontarian, that is those whose native tongue is French, although those with French ancestry account for 11% of the population. In relation to natural increase or inter-provincial migration, immigration is a huge population growth force in Ontario, as it has been over the last two centuries. More recent sources of immigrants with large or growing communities in Ontario include Caribbeans, Asians, Latin Americans, Europeans, and Africans. Most populations have settled in the larger urban centres.

Alberta is the fourth largest province in Canada, covering an area of 661,000 square kilometres – larger in size than Spain (504.000 square kilometres).

Alberta is famous for its wide open spaces, rolling prairies, lush forests and majestic mountains. The landscape, with 600 lakes, 245 rivers and more than 2,300 hours of annual sunshine, makes Alberta the ultimate year-round playground.

Some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in North America, are in Alberta:

• desert badlands with more dinosaur fossils than any other place on earth
• the world's only boreal forest songbird observatories
• the largest collection of Aboriginal rock art on the North American Plains
• awe-inspiring glaciers and  towering mountains.

Calgary – Alberta’s metropolitan centre, ranked as the world's cleanest city.

Agriculture has historically been a core industry in Alberta. The mid-1900s saw the discovery of large deposits of oil and natural gas in the provine (the immense Athabasca oil sands give Canada the world's second-largest proven oil reserves, after Saudi Arabia.), and these natural resources remain Alberta’s main economic drivers.
